About Coteau Hills Wildlife Management Area

The Coteau Hills Wildlife Management Area (WMA) covers a substantial expanse of the distinctive Coteau Hills region of northeastern South Dakota. This area is characterized by its rugged topography formed by glacial moraines, presenting rolling hills, deep ravines, and a complex array of wetlands and woodlands. The WMA supports a diverse ecosystem, including mixed hardwood forests, tallgrass prairie remnants, and wetland habitats, making it a stronghold for many wildlife species such as white-tailed deer, wild turkey, sharp-tailed grouse, pheasants, and various waterfowl. Historically, these hills provided important hunting and trapping areas for Native American tribes and later became a focus for conservation and wildlife management efforts by the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks. Visitors can experience a variety of outdoor activities in Coteau Hills WMA, including hiking on informal trails, hunting during regulated seasons, bird watching, and photography. Unlike large developed parks, its natural, less-developed character appeals to those seeking solitude and a more rugged outdoor experience. Important landmarks within the area include scenic vantage points offering panoramic views of the surrounding prairie, as well as several small lakes and marshes that support waterfowl. The area's unique geological structure and ecological diversity make it an important refuge for native flora and fauna, contributing to South Dakota's broader conservation goals. Access is generally by gravel roads, with minimal developed facilities, emphasizing a backcountry experience ideal for self-reliant visitors wanting to connect with nature.
